Founded in 2008 by ex-Peace Corps volunteers in Madagascar, Madécasse is a social enterprise. Even though 70% of the world’s cocoa comes from Africa, less than 1% of the world's chocolate is actually made there. Madécasse exists to change this. They’ve produced over 4,000,000 chocolate bars in Madagascar and in the process created meaningful income for over 200 people - from farming of cocoa, to making packaging, to making chocolate. To date, over 90% of Madécasse chocolate has been made from start to finish in Madagascar. However in late 2015, they started to increase their supply by making chocolate in collaboration with a contract manufacturer in the U.S., in addition to continuing their work with the local manufacturer in Madagascar. A necessary decision to keep the business moving forward while they invest in more manufacturing capacity in Madagascar which they expect to have in 2017.
The island of Madagascar grows some of the world's last genetically pure cocoa. Chocolate made from heirloom cocoa is so flavourful; it's like discovering chocolate for the very first time! Madécasse bars have won several prestigious awards such as Best in Show at both the New York Chocolate Show and Salon du Chocolat in Paris.
